The asbestos worker training is a 2-day in-person course that covers basic information needed to protect the health and safety of workers involved in asbestos abatement projects. In Alberta, all individuals entering a restricted area due to an asbestos hazard must successfully complete an approved asbestos worker course and have a valid worker certificate.

Course Content

In the course, students will become aware about the hazards of asbestos and asbestos abatement work. They will learn about methods to protect themselves from these hazards and ways to not endanger others. It will have theoretical and practical components. General topics will include:

• Introduction to asbestos and asbestos-containing materials
• Health effects of asbestos exposure
• Review of related legislation
• Introduction to respiratory protection
• Introduction to asbestos abatement methods
• Air monitoring and analysis
• Other health and safety considerations

At the end of the course, students will be required to take a written exam. To successfully pass the course, they must get 80% in the exam. They will then be provided with an original valid Asbestos Worker Card that will serve as their ticket.

Worker Recertification – $175.00

Asbestos Worker Cards are valid for three years from the date of issue. Prior to expiry, asbestos worker card holders must take a recertification exam at any approved testing agency and get at least 80% in the exam to get recertified. If the worker does not pass the exam, they must retake the 2-day Asbestos Course.

Please note, failure to recertify before the Asbestos Worker Card expiry date will require workers to retake the full 2-day Asbestos Course.

Exam Challenges – $175.00

Individuals may challenge the exam without completing the 2-day Asbestos Course if they meet one of the following requirements:

Individual has completed asbestos training in another jurisdiction or through another organization outside Alberta within the past 3 years

Proof of Requirement

Certificate or ticket showing completed asbestos training in another jurisdiction (must indicate name of course, date, and location)
